By Chinese Architecture 2 November 2009 770 views No Comment

Qingpu Gymnasium and Training Center, situated in the old Qingpu District, were constructed in 1980s, with a total area of 8,430 square meters. After being used for more than 20 years, the exterior and the facilities inside th building can no longer adapt to the need of the city’s rapid development. Thus the restoration and renovation are needed to renew the two buildings, with main focus on the reconstruction of exteriors.

Qingpu Gymnasium and Training Center are two separate buildings connected by a joint. The gymnasium located at the corner of the road. After several reconstructions, the facade and form of the building look stale; the lack of professional skills on the disposal of the form and elevation, especially the extracted facade and the arc-shaped glass curtain wall are to be improved in the renovation process.

According to the analysis of existing materials and the perambulation on the site, we found that there are following difficulties in this project: lack of found; many defects on the original building. the lack of materials on the present condition of the building; We have made some reconstruction principles to solve those problems, including: to focus on the reconstruction of the building’s for, facade and outside environment, thus we can change part of the city environment; pay attention to the improvement of the sports equipment inside the gymnasium according to the cost. In the reconstruction process, we should first make the new gymnasium and training center adapt to the character of the sports buildings, re-integrate the geometrical logic in the volume. And we are pursuing a concise and lucid architectural language, trying our best to closely combine the form and function with the original from without excessive decoration. Besides, the influence on the main structure of the original building should be limited; that is , we will make as little dismantlement as possible and try our best not to make reinforcement.

Concretely, we use following methods to attain our goal: we use the two-section facade according to the present condition of the building. In the upper section, we increase another skin for the extracted form of the original gymnasium and training center thus changing the building to a rectangular volume. Polycarbonate board is used as outside protecting structure.

We integrate the rain-protecting hoods at the entrance, the air-conditioner envelopes and the closed staircase according to the function and the present condition of the building and create a volume with vivid atmosphere. The reconstruction of Qingpu Gymnasium and training Center is an experiment of the reconstruction of the public buildings in the serried area of the city. The project will give an answer to the lingering questions: How to treat the buildings in the city? How to deal with these common buildings? Now the construction is being prepared.
