By Chinese Architecture 4 November 2009 1,432 views No Comment

The Jianchuan Museum Group planned by Atelier FCJZ & JiaKun Architects occupies 500 mu (about 333,000sqm) between the old town of Anren and the levee of Ciejiang River. It is composed by 3 groups of blocks with museums of different subjects and stores. Not only the memory, civilization and education, the plan also emphasizes the life and business of museum. It pays more attention rather than the physical one to the spatial city rather than the physical one.
Cultural Revolution Mirror Museum is one of the mixed blocks.
The certain design principle is confirmed under thoroughly satisfying the request of control detailed planning. First, it satisfies the optimal business neeeds. Secondly, shop design and combination are based on the prototype of traditional business mixed with dwelling cases in old town of Anren. The plan emphasizes the original ecosystem meaning and the moern business & living space with vitality and high-quality.
Three kinds of main materials are timber, concrete and brick. Enrich bricklaying tradition is embodied here. At the same bricklaying modulus control, different indoor functions correspond t various brick patterns with different transparency. That is to ease the self-weight of cantalever and satisfy the different requirement of light, airiness and privacy.
The shops along the streets at present condition constitute the stereoscopic museum base. On one hand, the vacant land at the back of the business becomes the garden. On the other hand, the museum becomes the building in garden. It constitutes the live and free-boundary museum space with the business. Visiting order is organized through “duplicate gallery” and “pavilions” in the museum. It allows not only a process of appreciating the exhibition, but also a process of visiting the garden.
The logics of structure, function, landscape and materials become the representation of the facade.
The rotatable “Mirror-doors” are set in turn at the corners of “duplicate gallery” in the museum. The numbers of “Mirror-doors” are increased progressively along the best visiting order, which changes the rhythm of space. The duplicate gallery becomes a huge, complex, visional “periscope”-space. The visitors lured by the eidolon are gradually introduced into a crazy collective game. The museum turns into a game-field and a simlative experiencing device of a period of Chinese history, the Cultural Revolution.
