Bu Bing is one of chinese architects. He Born in Yangzhou In 1979, Graduated from the Architecture Department of Tsinghua University and Yale. In 2000 he joined MADA s.p.a.m., and estabilished One Design Inc. In 2004.
domus: What is the meaning of “One Design” in chinese architecture?
Bu Bing:First of all, we believe the process of design is finding the best solution for our clients to achieve their vision and enhance their daily lives. The process must be an integration of individual creativity and interdisciplinary cooperation. On the other hand, we believe the style and characteristic of design depends on our understanding and mastering of the project, so our design is a process of profound understanding of client intention. One Design Inc. practices under a common philosphy and , we are operation as if we were a single team. Combining passion and resources, we are recognized for our achievements in the arenas of architectural design, urban planning, landscape design and others. Our members come from various academic and practicing backgrounds, so ,our design philosophy is broad and open-minded, design philospphy is broad and open-minded, yet specific and exact when applied to teach individual project.
domus: You have put forward the strategy of :control in medium and stopping properly” in your design practice. Can you explain it?
Bu Bing: It means to control the building’s quality by details at the mid-level whe we can’t control nodes and details completely. It is a compromise way: we never ask for more and we always stop at the suitable time. If we put it in terms of planning, it is to control those neccessary aspects needing and allow mistakes and uncontrolled factors, but without changing our initial expectation.
domus: Has working in MADA s.p.a.m. affected you greatly?
Bu Bing: Yes. Some of my working habits were formed there. At that time I joined MADA s.p.a.m. because their idias were well matched with mine. Besides specific working methods, what I learned was an open-minded way of thinking, which means thinking about different problems in different ways, not with a closed mind.
domus: Which architects do you like?
Bu Bing: David Chipperfield and Steven Holl. But I’m afraid this have no relation to my creations. It’s just an objective question about my personal interests. I am trying my best to eliminate their impacts on my dsign. As Wang Shu said: read, forget, and then write. I will insist on relying much on forms and methods rather than techniques in my work.
