This is a house that Qingyun Ma designed and built for his father on his homeland.Jade Valley in Lantian,located southeast of Xi’an,is the archaeological site of the prehistoric Lantian man.It is also where the greatest poet from Tang Dynasty,Wang Wai,built his second home.To build a house for himself(or parents,being the closest kinship)is dangerously euphoric for an architect.In this position,an architect’s interio and exterior are forced to collide.It is either a fairy tale where no conflict is allowed,or a hide-out where antagonism is consciously avoided.But the process of designing is not quiet,nor romantic.It is developed along with a mute violence.This is because every problem is self-generated and all solutions are self-negotiated.Here,creases in which to hide personal obsessions in forms and styles are sealed,and cracks for post-fact rationalization exposed.The problems of architecture are now being reduced to the most fundamental issues of budget,property restriction,construction capability,material availability and living conditions.The effort and intelligence of an architect is proboked and assessed by these fundamental issues.
