Anting New Town is the first starting town among the construction of experimental towns in Shanghai. It is also the core residential area of Shanghai International Auto City.

Anting New Town is the masterpiece with hard efforts of Prof. Albert Speer, German master of urban planning, and his colleagues. The planned occupation area is 4.9 square kilometers and the planned population is 50,000 to 80,000. The first phrase of New Town is located in the south of Wusong River, north of Shanghai-Nanjing express highway. The first phrase’s occupation area is about 2.5 square kilometers. The urban land use area is 1.8 square kilometers. The developed Total Gross Floor Area is 1.06 million square meters. The Floor Area Ratio is only 0.59. The green space percentage reaches 60%. The water area reaches 200 thousand square meters.

About 20 German design institutes and over 100 German architects did the original elevation design, which guaranteed the diversity of city styles. Focusing on the concept of transparent rooms, the residential buildings provide good natural lighting and ventilation, providing the most comfortable and convenient residence. New Town’s buildings stress the scenery of facing the river/water. The buildings are integrated with the nature harmoniously.

In Anting New Town, buildings’ outside structures were designed according to European standards. EPS/XPS heat preservation system was adopted in outside wall, roof and floor, while the heat preservation profile, Low-E toughened glass (middle empty with two layers) and the sunshade system were used in window and door system. This kind of outside structure system greatly reduces buildings’ energy consumption. The thermal conductivity (U) of outside wall is only 0.50W/m2K and that of window and door system is only 2.0W/m2K. These standards are much higher than current standards of energy saving building in Shanghai.
The central energy supply system scheme was provided by German FICHTNER engineering consultation company. The system is composed of concentrated energy cooling station, unit heating station, energy pipes, adjusting valves, temperature control system, HVAC facility terminal. The overall energy saving reaches 65%.

anting is one of the new satellite towns, which were supposed to reduce the pressure of inner city growth in shanghai, and i think that is why client wanted anting built in the style of german city, but for sure the architectural plan was adapted to chinese needs.
